Cycling through Saranac Lake

From right, Ashley Skeith, her husband Bryan Allen and her dad Richard Chotkowski bike through Saranac Lake on Monday, their first day of a 250-mile loop around the Adirondacks they’re traveling this week. Skeith and Allen, a physician and hydrogeologist from Michigan, and Chotkowski from Connecticut, started in Wilmington Notch that morning and were going to camp for the night when they got to Rollins Pond. “Michigan’s very flat ... so we were looking for some hills,” Skeith said. “A little hillier than we anticipated,” Allen said. “Whatever down you gain it’ll cost you to go back up. We’re feeling it.” They were all excited about the haul of sardines, mashed potatoes and water they bought in Saranac Lake, one of the “islands of safety” they planned along their route. Skeith said she hoped to use the knitting supplies she brought along in her pack when they got to camp that night. (Enterprise photo — Aaron Cerbone)
