Spikes in the road

With rails removed, metal spikes litter the railroad bed going through Saranac Lake, as seen Friday morning at Cedar Street. National Salvage, the company the state Department of Transportation hired to remove the railroad infrastructure, plans to have a crew come through with a magnet and dump truck to clean up the metal, have another crew remove the wooden ties, and then grade the railroad bed smooth. After that, the state will finish the surface and fix crossings to turn the corridor, which the state owns, into a trail for biking, snowmobiling and other recreational uses.
