Franklin County cases continue to rise

The Franklin County Public Health Department reported 15 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

With the new cases, and 90 residents recently deemed recovered, Franklin County’s total active case count stood at 119 on Tuesday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced new state guidelines on Tuesday that allow people to leave quarantine after 10 days instead of 14 days without getting tested, as long as they don’t develop any symptoms.

Though people will be allowed to leave quarantine after 10 days, they will still have to monitor themselves for symptoms for another four days, however.

Those who develop symptoms after leaving quarantine should isolate themselves and contact their respective county health department for guidance, according to Cuomo’s office.

This change in the state’s quarantine requirements follows updated recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Cuomo.

There were 1,063 people in Franklin County who were under public health orders to quarantine on Tuesday.

Updated COVID-19 data for Essex County was not available by press time Tuesday.

Recoveries

Ninety Franklin County residents were released from isolation on Tuesday.

Though some people who test positive for COVID-19 have reported experiencing long-term effects after being released from isolation, those given the OK to leave isolation are considered no longer contagious by the county health department.

The 90 recent recoveries in Franklin County include 36 inmates, according to county Manager Donna Kissane.

Since March, about 854 Franklin County residents — or 1.7% of the county’s population — have contracted COVID-19, according to data from Franklin County Public Health. That number includes some suspected cases that weren’t confirmed by testing, whether because there were restrictions on testing at the time, or because the person declined to be tested.

Of the 854 residents who have contracted COVID-19, about 85% have recovered, nearly 14% are still in isolation with the virus, and less than 1%, or eight people, have died.

Statewide

More than 160,000 test results from across the state were processed on Tuesday. Of those, 7.14%, or 11,438, were positive, according to Gov. Cuomo’s office. That’s down from 8.33% on Monday, the highest daily rate the state has seen in months.

Statewide, 7,814 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 on Tuesday, up by 255 from Monday. The number of people in intensive care statewide was 1,244.

One hundred and twenty-four COVID-positive New Yorkers died on Monday.
