The National Weather Service and Gov. Andrew Cuomo are warning people in the North Country and other parts of upstate New York to prepare for high winds this afternoon and evening.

The NWS has issued a Wind Advisory from 1 to 8 p.m. today for much of the North Country.

Franklin County is included in the advisory, along with St. Lawrence, Clinton, Jefferson and Lewis counties.

“The primary focus will be downslope regions of northwest facing slopes of the Adirondacks,” the NWS advisory says. “Thus, the strongest winds will be along and south of Route 11.”

Power outages could result from tree limbs being blown down onto electrical lines, the NWS said. The agency also warns people to secure outdoor objects and to use extra caution when driving, “especially if operating a high-profile vehicle.”

Cuomo’s office said winds are expected to gust up to 65 mph beginning Sunday afternoon and continuing into Monday morning in the Western New York, Finger Lakes and North Country regions.

“In addition, lakeshore flooding may occur in places along Lake Erie and Lake Ontario due to high winds and wave action Sunday night and into Monday morning,” the governor’s office said in a press release.

Cuomo said state agencies are making preparations, including the Department of Transportation, Thruway Authority, Department of Environmental Conservation, Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, New York State Police and Department of Public Service.

“With forecasts calling for strong winds to impact much of New York on Sunday, state agencies stand ready to support our local partners with any resources they may need and will remain in contact with utility companies throughout the weekend to ensure any power outages are addressed as quickly as possible,” Cuomo said. “New Yorkers should also be sure to take the precautions necessary for protecting themselves, their families and their property.”
