LPI seeks submissions for student poetry, photography contests

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Institute is now inviting all students attending school or residing in the Adirondack Park to participate in its upcoming annual poetry and photography contests.

The Great Adirondack Young People’s Poetry Contest is open to all students in grades 1 to 12. Each entry must be original and must have a title. Poems can be any length and in any verse form, with no restrictions on subject matter. All submissions must include the student’s name, grade, school, school address, teacher’s name and teacher’s email address. Entries are limited to two poems per person and must be postmarked or emailed by March 1, 2021, to the Lake Placid Institute at P.O. Box 988, Lake Placid,

NY 12946, or adkpoetry@gmail.com.

Selected poems from each grade will be published in a booklet entitled “Words from the Woods.” As in recent years, the 2021 contest will be judged by the Poetry Group of Saranac Lake. The Institute is hoping to be able to hold an award ceremony in April, at a date and place to be announced, at which the young poets are invited to read their work.

“24 Hours: A Photographic Interpretation of Life in the Adirondacks” is open to all high school students in the Adirondack region. Submissions may be color or black-and-white, and must be shot within the Adirondacks. There are no restrictions on subject matter. Each photo must be accompanied by a short essay, between 50 and 150 words, describing the photographer’s vision and inspiration. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 31, 2021. Students are asked to visit the Institute’s website (lakeplacidinstitute.org) for submission guidelines.

This year’s photography contest will be judged by Robert ParkeHarrison, an acclaimed fine art photographer and professor of photography at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. For the past 20 years, ParkeHarrison has collaborated with his wife Shana, staging photographic images and sculptures that explore the relationship between humans, technology and nature. Their work has been widely exhibited throughout the U.S. and Western Europe.

As in past years, cash awards of $200, $100, and $50 will be given to first-, second- and third-place submissions. Photos will also be selected for Honorable Mention, Juror Choice, and LPI Board Choice. All photo submissions and their accompanying essays will be published in a booklet and will be matted, framed and exhibited at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts at a date to be determined.
