SARANAC LAKE — Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the traditional Halloween activites that local communities have held for youngsters have been canceled this year.

Saranac Lake normally has hundreds of youth visiting area businesses to gather treats, and Lake Placid has had a parade for children each year as well as a gathering at the police station.

Although events such as these not taking place in our area to celebrate this Halloween, youngsters haven’t been left out in the dark, and their schools made sure there were still fun activities to help their costumed kids celebrate the holiday on Friday.

At St. Bernard’s School in Saranac Lake, a Trunk or Treat event took place in the school’s parking lot. Parents drove to the school and decked out their vehicles in Halloween themed looks from colorful to ghostly, and in procession, the 63 students at St. Bernard’s visited each vehicle to pick out treats.

“The parents had a blast, the kids had a blast,” said principal Andrea Kilbourne-Hill, who fluttered around the parking lot during the Trunk or Treat dressed as a butterfly.

Downtown trick-or-treating was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so schools tried new ways for kids to dress up in costumes and have fun. (Enterprise photo — Lou Reuter)

In Lake Placid, at the public elementary school and St. Agnes school, students paraded in costume outside, and the same held true at the Bloomingdale Elementary School.

Although it was a chilly day, the sun was shining, giving all the youngsters an extra Halloween treat this year.
