SL Police Review Committee holds online hearing Thursday

SARANAC LAKE — The newly formed village Police Review Committee will host a virtual public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Thursday via both Zoom and Facebook Live. To attend the meeting, go to saranaclakeny.gov and find the meeting under the Calendar section, or go to Saranac Lake’s Facebook page.

The committee will update the public on the work they’ve done so far, give an overview of the executive order, then open the forum to public discussion.

The committee was formed as part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Executive Order 203 on police reform and reinvention, itself a response to the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25. Cuomo’s mandated police reforms are due to be implemented by April 2021.

The committee has also launched an online survey to “maximize public input,” according to a press release from village Manager John Sweeney on Tuesday. The survey is due by Friday, Oct. 8.

The survey can be taken at bit.ly/slpdsurvey. Print surveys are also available at the village offices, the Saranac Lake Free Library, the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, North Country Community College, the Harrietstown Housing Authority, Adirondack Health and Franklin County Social Services office.

In addition to Sweeney, members of the Police Review Committee are Saranac Lake Police Deprtment Chief James Joyce, village Trustee Melinda Little, Harrietstown Housing Authority Executive Director Sarah Clarkin, Samaritan House Manager Ernest Hough, Chris Morris of the Adirondack Diversity Initiative, Franklin County Assistant District Attorney David Hayes, Betsy Fuller from Adirondack Health, NCCC Assistant Director Angela Brice and Franklin County Community Services Director Susan Lavigne.
