Absentee deadline is extended until June 23 election day

The deadline to submit absentee ballots to vote in the June 23 Democratic presidential primary has been extended until the day of the election.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive order Sunday is the latest in a stream of changes to this year’s voting process during the coronavirus pandemic, previously issuing orders sending all New York voters a postage-paid absentee ballot application in the mail and allowing every one to vote absentee in the primary.

To be counted, the primary ballots must be postmarked by June 23rd.

“This is a positive development for primary voters,” Essex County Democratic Election Commissioner Sue Montgomery-Corey wrote in an email. “Many voters are exercising their option to vote by absentee ballot this year and having this clarity on the post marking of their ballots will be helpful to them and to those of us responsible for counting the ballots and administering the primary election.”

She said the previous deadline has been a source of frustration for many voters.

Cuomo also announced he will issue an other executive order extending the deadline for school districts to receive school budget ballots by a week.

To be counted, school budget ballots will still be accepted by hand delivery through 5 p.m. on June 9 — the original last date for all ballots — and can now be received by the school district by mail through June 16.
