Gov. Andrew Cuomo, during his daily press briefing in Albany on Monday, said he believed the worst of the outbreak in New York may be over. However, while Cuomo appeared to be generalizing about the state as a whole, the progress of the outbreak may be quite different in somewhere like the North Country than in the New York City metro area, which has most of the state’s population and COVID-19 cases.

“I believe the worst is over if we continue to be smart,” the governor said. “I believe we can start on the path to normalcy.”

Cuomo later said that although the state is seeing numbers plateau in select categories, if New Yorkers don’t continue to adhere to social distancing and self-isolation guidance, the outbreak could get worse.

Statewide, 195,031 New Yorkers had tested positive for COVID-19 as of Monday, according to the state Department of Health. More than 478,000 people have been tested altogether.
