NY village elections postponed again, but when?

An executive order from the governor on Monday postponed all village elections in March, April and May. That includes Saranac Lake’s, which had already been pushed back from March 18 to April 28.

April 28 was also New York’s presidential primary, but late last week that was postponed until June 23, the date of the state primary.

A letter from the New York Conference of Mayors’ Executive Director Peter Baynes says “no further information regarding the rescheduling of such elections is presently available.”

The letter says NYCOM is awaiting guidance regarding the timing, location and manner of the elections from the governor’s office, as the executive order indicated would be forthcoming.

“As a way to avoid the complications of holding the election on the same day as the June 23 presidential and state primaries, NYCOM has requested that the governor reschedule the postponed village elections for June 16 (which is the statutory date for this year’s regularly scheduled June village elections),” Baynes wrote.

Additionally, the executive order has postponed the circulation, filing, and collection of all designating and independent nominating petitions. NYCOM staff will be updating the villages with clarifying guidance as soon as we are able.

Saranac Lake has three candidates running for two four-year seats on the village Board of Trustees: Fred Balzac of the Green Party and incumbent Democrats Tom Catillaz and Rich Shapiro.
