SARANAC LAKE — Saturday showcased nearly three hours of girls and women tossing fry pans in Riverside Park.

Some gripped the handle, some held the pan itself and most tried to throw the cast iron so that it would slide, giving it just that little extra distance.

The winners by age bracket were

6-8: Enzi VanNosdeln, 27 feet 10 inches

9-12: Gracie Musamoli, 43 feet 6 inches

13-17: Olivia Bell, 47 feet 4 inches

18-29: Katie Burgess, 47 feet 4 inches

30-40: Beth Jennings, 60 feet 5 inches

41-50: Michelle Raville, 44 feet 4 inches

51-60: Kamala Hulbert, 45 feet 2 inches

61-70: Gwen Wolf, 34 feet 4 inches

70: Beryl Szwed, 18 feet

Jennings from Harrisville, Lewis County, won not only her age bracket but also the grand prize for longest distance in any bracket. This is her first Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.

“It feels cool to win it,” she said. “We love coming up here. We love Saranac Lake.”

Jennings said she didn’t have any particular strategy for her throwing, hoping years of being an athlete and a college lacrosse player would help her win.

“There’s no method to the madness,” she said. “I guess I was just watching people and figuring it out. I got in a good stance, gave it a couple of windups and there it went.”
