Adirondack Youth Choir to be formed in July, to perform in August

SARANAC LAKE — Young singers in the Adirondacks will have a new opportunity to participate in choral music during the summer break.

Conductor and educator Barbara Tagg returns to the Adirondacks to begin the Adirondack Youth Choir, comprised of students ages 10 to 16 who will rehearse Monday through Friday from July 20 to 31 at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake.

The choir will perform a concert on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Saranac Lake.

Tuition for the choir is $120 per student. Scholarships will be available for students in need of assistance. All treble voices are welcome, and no auditions are required.

Tagg directed the Adirondack Children’s Choir for over 20 years as part of the Adirondack Festival of American Music, founded by composer Gregg Smith. The former Syracuse University faculty member founded and directed the Syracuse Children’s Chorus from 1981 to 2010. She has conducted children’s choirs in Canada, Europe, China and across the United States.

Her choirs have premiered more than 90 commissioned works for treble choirs. She is a former board member of Chorus America and has served in national leadership positions for the American Choral Directors Association.
