GABRIELS — A Saranac Lake Central School District bus was involved in a three-car collision Wednesday afternoon.

No students were injured, and the bus sustained only minor damage, the district superintendent said. It wasn’t clear whether anyone in the other vehicles was hurt.

The collision happened shortly after 4 p.m. in the vicinity of 971 state Route 86 in Gabriels during whiteout conditions.

“Our bus was stopped to let students off at a drop-off,” Superintendent Diane Fox said Friday. “A vehicle stopped, but then another didn’t and hit that car from behind. It didn’t damage the bus other than the crossing arm.”

Fox said in these situations, buses have to remain stopped and keep kids on board for safety protocols.

The Paul Smith-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department responded to the collision at 4:16 p.m. Crews provided scene safety and directed traffic, turning drivers around back toward Saranac Lake. They were back in service at 6:23 p.m.
