Rangers rescue Mt. Jo hiker

LAKE PLACID — State forest rangers helped a group of hikers on Mount Jo get back to the trailhead after one of them was injured on their way down from the summit.

On Sunday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m., Essex County Emergency Services transferred a call from a group of four hikers on Mount Jo to the state Department of Environmental Conservations’ Ray Brook dispatch.

The caller told rangers that her father — a 42-year-old from Hartsdale, Westchester County — had slipped on the ice while descending the mountain and injured his left leg. When asked if the hikers had traction and could continue down, the caller said they did not have traction but felt comfortable enough to continue down the mountain.

Forest rangers James Giglinto and Megan McCone responded and found the hiking group at 2:30 p.m. The rangers evaluated the injury and helped the group slowly make progress off the peak.

At 6:19 p.m., Giglinto, McCone and the hiking group were back at the trailhead.

The injured hiker sought medical attention on his own.
