Police identify driver of vehicle found in river

WILMINGTON — The driver of a vehicle found in the West Branch of the AuSable River Wednesday has been located, uninjured.

The 1999 Jeep Cherokee was found in the river about 1 mile from Monument Falls on state Route 86, at approximately 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. No one was inside.

New York State Police said Thursday that driver was Zachery J. Bova, 35, of Wilmington.

Bova had been traveling north on state Route 86 that morning when his vehicle crossed the center line, exited the west shoulder of the road and struck a guardrail, according to State Police Troop B Public Information Officer Jennifer Fleishman. Upon hitting the guardrail, the car rolled over and fell down the riverbank.

Bova’s car came to rest on its passenger side in the river, Fleishman said. He left the scene, and police later found him. It’s unclear why he abandoned his vehicle. He was not criminally charged.

Route 86 was closed for roughly two-and-a-half hours Wednesday morning. A tow truck from Central Garage in Lake Placid removed the car from the river. The Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department responded at 7:55 a.m. with two trucks and 19 members and provided traffic control. The department was back in service at 11:35 a.m.
