North Country Sports council eyes Beach House offices

LAKE PLACID — The Beach House may be getting a new tenant.

The Lake Placid Village Board of Trustees on Tuesday authorized Mayor Craig Randall to sign a one-year rental agreement with the Adirondack North Country Sports Council for office space in the municipal Beach House. That office space is currently occupied by USA Luge, which used it as a temporary headquarters while its Church Street building was under construction.

With an expansion project at their primary headquarters now complete, USA Luge is expected to vacate the Beach House office space by Feb. 1, according to Randall, freeing up that space for the Sports Council.

The Sports Council’s offices are currently located at 2284 Saranac Ave., but Randall said it has outgrown that space — and in the lead-up to the 2023 World University Games, the council expects to need even more space one year from now.

The council was created in 1986 to support Lake Placid’s effort to secure another Olympic Winter Games. The group later changed its focus to attracting other large-scale sporting events like the Ironman triathlon. The council was inactive for roughly a decade, until 2015, according to its website. It was involved with Lake Placid’s bid for the 2023 World University Games.

The village is offering the Beach House office space, and six parking spaces, to the council for $1,000 per month.

The main meeting room at the Beach House will remain open for community use, Randall said.
