DOT plans Route 86 repaving

LAKE PLACID — The state Department of Transportation is planning to overhaul the Sara-Placid section of state Route 86, starting sometime this year.

The village of Lake Placid has received official notification of the upcoming construction, which is expected to stretch from the railroad tracks in Saranac Lake to Elm Street in Lake Placid, Mayor Craig Randall announced at the village board meeting Tuesday.

The DOT confirmed that it would be working on that stretch, both this year and next year, in an email Wednesday.

“The proposal on Route 86 includes overlaying pavement on the section from the railroad tracks to Price Chopper, mostly at night with one lane closed, except for emergency situations,” DOT Region 1 spokesman Bryan Viggiani said. “Pavement on the section of Route 86 from the Price Chopper to Elm Street will be milled and filled, also with one lane closed. Work on this section will not occur during the summer season, and not during the morning peak, afternoon peak and weekend peak hours. Additional curbing, guiderail and drainage work will also be incorporated as part of this project.”

As the department works on the road, drivers could experience delays similar to what was seen when the DOT repaved sections of that route this past September, according to Randall. Drivers said at the time that the road work caused a major disruption of traffic, with some residents reporting hour-long delays.

“I respectfully requested they conduct a public information session for people in that neighborhood,” Randall said, referencing the stretch of road between the Outpost Plaza — which houses businesses like Price Chopper, Long Run Wealth Advisors, NBT Bank and Caffe Rustica — to Elm Street.

“In addition to that, we have a noise ordinance they would need to apply for an exception from,” he said.

Randall said the department hasn’t yet informed the village of the dates when the construction will happen.

“The exact dates of Route 86 work will be finalized after a contractor is approved and on board in early 2020,” Viggiani said.
