Body of man in Saranac River found by police

PLATTSBURGH — State Police have found the body of the man who jumped into the Saranac River Tuesday, according to Plattsburgh City Police Chief Levi Ritter.

He said that the State Police team had found the body at approximately 6 p.m. during a last-minute check of an area they had taken sonar readings of earlier.

The body was found in the bay area further out from the river mouth, Ritter said, adding that further details about the man’s identity and the circumstances leading to him ending up in the river would be released Thursday.

A combined team of the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team and the Adirondack Technical Rescue Taskforce had worked with the Plattsburgh City Police and Fire Departments in the search on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Ritter said Wednesday that the search had long since turned into a recovery effort, due to the sheer amount of time the man had been in the water.
