Dowd tweet disgusting, sexist, Stefanik says

PLATTSBURGH – North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik called ABC News political analyst Michael Dowd’s comments about her disgusting, sexist and shameful.

In a tweet Wednesday that has since been deleted, Dowd wrote, “Elise Stefanik is a perfect example of why just electing someone because they are a woman or a millennial doesn’t necessarily get you the leaders we need.”

“He apologized after significant public pressure and public outcry but, obviously, that’s what his thoughts are and it’s sad,” Stefanik said Thursday.

“It’s not the first time I’ve faced sexist remarks,” she continued. “It probably won’t be the last time, unfortunately.

“But this is why we don’t have young women running for office.”

After deleting the tweet, Dowd tweeted that he “in no way meant to suggest that we don’t need women or millennial leaders.”

He added, “In fact to (sic) opposite is true and I have advocated for that. I will be more careful in how I phrase my thoughts. Lesson learned.”

Human rights issues

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met at the White House and, later, held a joint press conference.

“I think that Erdogan has significant issues when it comes to his leadership of Turkey,” Stefanik said.

“There are significant human rights issues.”

Stefanik has decried Trump’s decision to move U.S. troops out, calling it “a misguided and catastrophic blow to our national security interests.”

She also expressed concern over how this would and has impacted the Kurds and Syrian Democratic Forces, who have served as U.S. allies in the fight against ISIS and are targets of the Turkish incursion.

Thursday, she maintained that she disagrees with the administration’s decision, but said she would follow up on Erdoan’s visit since she was focused on impeachment that day.

“But my record on Turkey and Syria and the Kurds is crystal clear.”

Stephen Miller

Earlier this year, Stefanik called for the resignations of Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), due to racist comments, and Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, when a racist yearbook photo he was in surfaced, the Adirondack Daily Enterprise reported.

Now, emails have been leaked showing that one of Trump’s senior policy advisers, Stephen Miller, sent emails –which have since been leaked — promoting white nationalist literature and pushing racist immigration stories to conservative website Breitbart News in 2015 and 2016, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

When asked about Miller, Stefanik said she had not read the emails, but that she has condemned white nationalism.

“Stephen Miller is not an elected official.

“I haven’t read the emails, but I have been one of the leading voices condemning white nationalism and condemning any form of bigotry whether it’s antisemitism, white nationalism or racism.”
