NCCC invites public to make ‘comfort kits’ for survivors of domestic violence

SARANAC LAKE — As part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, North Country Community College will join with its fellow SUNY colleges and universities to help support victims and survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.

As part of “SUNY’s Got Your Back,” students, faculty, staff and community members will gather at each of the college’s campus communities — Saranac Lake, Malone and Ticonderoga — this week to create “comfort kits” that will be distributed to victims and survivors of violence, and to learn methods of better preventing and responding to violence.

The public is invited to attend and participate. NCCC’s SUNY’s Got Your Back events will be held at the following locations and times:

¯ Tulloch Campus in Malone, Oct. 16, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

¯ Saranac Lake Campus, Oct. 16, 3 to 4 p.m.

¯ Ticonderoga Campus, Oct. 17, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The comfort kits assembled at these events will be provided to domestic violence centers, rape crisis programs, hospitals, and law enforcement agencies in the North Country and across the state. Each comfort kit contains personal essential hygiene products to assist victims with self-care — soap, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a comb and deodorant — a pen, notepad, a stress ball and an affirming message from a volunteer. Critically, the bags also contain information about available support services and educational materials intended to alert victims of their rights under state law.
