Jefferson Starship to play Franklin County Fair as Air Supply cancels
Australian soft-rock duo Air Supply has canceled its appearance at the Franklin County. They will be replaced by Jefferson Starship.
“Due to an illness in his immediate family, lead vocalist Russell Hitchcock must travel to his native … Australia as soon as possible,” Air Supply posted on its Facebook page. In addition to the scheduled Aug. 9 Franklin County Fair show, the band has canceled its Aug. 10 appearance at the Twin Rivers Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island, the post states.
Fair officials announced Friday that Jefferson Starship, which grew out of the seminal psychedelic band Jefferson Airplane, will fill the Aug. 9 space left by Air Supply’s cancelation.
Jefferson Starship was created by the Airplane’s founding member Paul Kantner when the latter band was going through one of its periodic membership upheavals. The original Jefferson Starship lineup included Kantner and other Jefferson Airplane members Grace Slick, Davis Freiberg and John Barbata. The band — which like Jefferson Airplane went through many personnel changes over the years, recorded several top-selling albums, including “Red Octopus” (with the hit single “Miracles”), “Freedom at Point Zero” (with the hit single “Jane”) and “Modern Times” (Find Your Way Back”).
The current iteration of Jefferson Starship (not to be confused with Starship, which grew out of Jefferson Starship and included several of the latter band’s members) features multi-instrumentalist and singer Freiberg, drummer Donny Baldwin, singer/guitarist Cathy Richardson, keyboard player Chris Smith and guitarist Jude Gold.
The Franklin County Fair will have tickets available for the Jefferson Starship performance online at www.frcofair.com and at the Franklin County Fair office in Malone. Grandstand tickets are $25 and $35; track tickets are $45.
People who purchased tickets for the Air Supply Show may use them to see Jefferson Starship on the same night, Aug. 9, or call the Franklin County Fair office in Malone 518-483-0720 for a refund.
