Rangers help lost, injured hikers

State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers helped locate lost hikers, a missing man and a woman with a leg injury.

Town of Tupper Lake

On Saturday, June 15 at about 1:30 a.m., police in Tupper Lake requested forest ranger assistance for a missing 62-year-old Tupper Lake man who was known as an avid nature walker. The man was also known to frequent the Deer Pond trail.

State police located the man’s vehicle at the trailhead and rangers arrived on scene shortly after 2 a.m. After searching all night with negative results, the man was found just before 7 a.m., dehydrated and malnourished. He was escorted to the trail and brought to a waiting ambulance via ATV.

Town of Newcomb

At 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, DEC was notified of two hikers who had last been seen at 5:30 p.m. that day on the summit of Santanoni Peak. Two hikers in the party had returned to the trailhead shortly after 8 p.m. and then waited two hours before driving to get cell service. One of the party had received a text from the missing New York City hikers saying they were lost and had returned to the summit.

Numerous rangers responded and searched the area, including going to the summit, with negative results. The missing hikers were located at 7:44 a.m. in good health, about 1.5 miles from the trailhead. The pair walked back to the trailhead and were reunited with the rest of their party at Marcy Field.

Town of Caroga

At 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, June 16, forest rangers responded to a call for a 19-year-old female with an unstable lower leg injury on Kane Mountain.

Rangers, Caroga Lake Fire Department and EMS conducted a rescue, splinting the woman’s leg and transporting her via UTV to a waiting ambulance.
