LAKE PLACID — A litter of nine great Pyrenees puppies were rescued from under a chicken coop by the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department and State Police at a house near Mount Van Hovenburg Wednesday.

Members responded to 84 Raspberry Way at 9:16 a.m. with one truck and 12 members after a friend of the family had called the police. The puppies’ mother had crawled under the coop before giving birth to her litter, and they were not able to get out.

“I’m not even sure how she got under the chicken coop,” Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department head driver Justin Roy said, adding that there was only around 3 inches of clearance. “You always hear of cats in a tree. You never hear of dogs under a chicken coop.”

With goats and chickens milling around, members used a rescue air bag to lift the coop off the ground. They distracted the mother long enough to pluck the several-day-old puppies out one by one and wrap them in a warm blanket in the shelter of a barn, according to department member Brady Hayes.

Roy said the dog’s owner, Miona Mitrobic, offered to donate one of the puppies to the fire department when it gets old enough, and he said that after talking with the chief and others, it would be a welcome addition to the firehouse.

“We’ve never had a dog,” Roy said. “And I know some of those shifts get lonely at night.”

He said though the great Pyrenees would likely be too big to ride in a fire truck, it would get plenty of attention at the firehouse.
