Prison brawl reported in Dannemora; Several inmates hospitalized

DANNEMORA — An apparent major brawl in the North Yard at Clinton Correctional Facility sent several inmates to the hospital Tuesday.

Officials at the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said they were investigating an ongoing incident between incarcerated individuals at the prison.

No staff were hurt; however, several incarcerated individuals were transported to the hospital for treatment, a statement from DOCCS said.

“We cannot comment further on specifics, however, we can state that the department has zero tolerance for any incarcerated individual in our facilities who does not follow protocols or worse, commits a criminal act,” the statement said.

It also said that anyone found to have committed a crime inside a DOCCS facility will be held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Reports from outside the prison alluded to as many as 200 inmates being involved in the incident, but that could not be confirmed.

Nor could reports that as many as 22 canisters of gas were fired into the yard in an attempt to quell the fighting.
