Podskoch discusses ‘Adirondack 102 Club’ book at two venues
SARANAC LAKE — Author Marty Podskoch will speak about his book “The Adirondack 102 Club: Your Passport & Guide to all the North Country Towns & Villages” at two Saranac Lake venues Wednesday.
The first presentation will take place at 2 p.m. at Saranac Village at Will Rogers. The next will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Saranac Lake Free Library. Both are free and open to the public. After the presentation, Podskoch will sign copies of his book.
The idea for the 102 Club began after Podskoch read about Dr. Arthur Peach of Vermont, who in 1954 suggested the idea of an informal group, the Vermont 251 Club, to veer off the beaten path “to discover the secret and lovely places that main roads do not reveal.”
Podskoch believed the Adirondacks would benefit from a similar club. He has traveled extensively in the Adirondacks gathering material for his five books on the Adirondack fire towers, the Civilian Conservation Corps camps and Adirondack lore, and will share the joys of fully experiencing the Adirondacks and getting to know its local people and places.
Podskoch had local writers describe each town and village’s location, history and important points of interests. Podskoch felt the local residents knew their town a lot better than he did.
Each year an annual dinner is held at which members share their stories and Vagabond Awards are presented to members who have visited all 102 towns. On Sept. 19, the fifth annual Adirondack 102 Dinner will be held at the Hotel Saranac.
