LAKE PLACID — Fifteen hundred ducks are vying for the first position at the 16th annual Rotary Club of Lake Placid Dam Duck Race on Saturday, June 15.

First place is worth $1,500 to the lucky winner.

There are other prizes and contests too, from karaoke to winning a $1,000 Stewart’s gas card raffle. As of this week, there are only 300 tickets available.

There’s a mechanical bull and jousting, a chance to sample local craft brews or enjoy a cold glass of “homemade” lemonade by the youngest Rotarian member, Holly Erenstone.

Hosted for 16 years by Lisa Grigoriadis, owner of Lisa G’s restaurant, on the corner of Mill Pond and Sentinel Road, the annual Dam Duck Race event is from 5 to 8 p.m. Before the race begins, participants are invited to Lisa’s G’s deck and terrace and for an all-you-can-eat barbecue, while food lasts. Cost is $15 for adults or $8 for children under 10.

Then at 7 p.m. sharp, 1,500 little numbered yellow rubber ducks will pour over Mill Pond Dam into the Chubb River, moving to the finish line where Rotarian volunteers armed with big nets are there to catch them.

The proceeds from this event support Lake Placid community projects such as Adirondack Health, Backpack Program, BOCES New Vision, Ecumenical Food Pantry, Lake Placid Beautification Committee, Lake Placid Community Day, Lake Placid High School Choir, Lake Placid Outing Club, Lake Placid High School After-Prom Party, Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service, Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society, Mercy Care for the Adirondacks, North Elba Christmas Fund and the Thomas Shipman Memorial Youth Center.

Duck tickets and gas card raffle tickets are available for purchase at the UPS Store, Lisa G’s, Gordon W. Pratt Agency and from your friendly neighborhood Rotary member.
