DEC taking comments on 46 Corners UMP

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is asking for public input before it begins updating the unit management plan (UMP) for eight state forests on the western edge of the Adirondacks.

The 46 Corners UMP was last updated in 2013, and covers Big Brook, Cobb Brook, Fall Brook, Florence Hill, Furnace Creek, Mad River, Swancott Hill and Tri-County state forests in the towns of Annsville, Camden, Florence, Lewis, and Redfield, located in Oneida, Lewis and Oswego counties. Together, the forests cover about 18,042 acres of public land.

There are about 50 miles of trout streams within the unit, along with four man-made ponds. Roads and snowmobile trails cross the forests, along with about 2 miles of ATV trails for people with disabilities. Hunting and trapping opportunities are abundant due to beaver swamps and meadows, and the DEC also conducts timber harvesting on the lands.

After the public comment period, DEC will release a revised draft UMP.

Public comments and suggestions will be accepted until June 5, 2019, and can be sent to Chelsea Sheridan, Senior Forester, 225 North Main Street, Herkimer, NY 13350 or emailed to R6.UMP@dec.ny.gov.
