Conservation groups want private ATVs banned in some parts of the Adirondacks

ALBANY (AP) — A coalition of conservation groups say New York state must do more to address the impact of all-terrain vehicles in the Adirondacks.

The group, which includes organizations such as the Adirondack Council and the Sierra Club, published a report Monday detailing the impact ATVs have on the local ecosystem.

The report finds that current policies prohibiting ATV use in public areas such as the Adirondacks aren’t enough, and that without stronger rules ATVs will damage public lands and endanger riders and other visitors.

Supporters for tougher restrictions say ATVs are a problem in the Catskills and other publicly preserved natural areas.

The report recommends a ban on private ATV use in forest preserve lands, as well as a law prohibiting anyone younger than 16 from operating an ATV.
