Fire does major damage to Owl’s Head home

Owl’s Head residents were displaced from their home after a fire there Wednesday night.

The American Red Cross announced Thursday it had assisted two adults and a 5-year-old child after the fire, giving them financial assistance for necessities such as food and clothing.

“Volunteers also offered emotional support, comfort kits containing personal care items and stuffed animals for the child,” the Red Cross’ Eastern New York Region said in a press release, adding that the organization will remain available to help the family as needed.

The Owl’s Head-Mountain View Volunteer Fire Volunteer was dispatched to fight the blaze at 65 Westside Road just before 8 p.m. Wednesday and didn’t return to the station until around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Fire Chief Pat Carr.

Flames were “coming through the roof” when firefighters arrived, Carr said.

The residents were in the home at the time but got out safely with no injuries.

The fire department received mutual aid from the Duane, Malone, Burke, Constable, St. Regis Falls, Paul Smith’s-Gabriels and Bangor departments.

Among the challenges they had to deal with were the frigid temperatures that have been affecting much of the country this week.

“Anytime you’re fighting a fire in zero degrees, it isn’t fun, but we did alright,” Carr said.

The house suffered “extensive damage,” according to Carr, and the residents were staying with family for the time being.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Thursday.
