SARANAC LAKE — Incumbent Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik defeated Democratic challenger Tedra Cobb in every county in New York’s 21st Congressional District, but Franklin and Essex counties were two of the closest.

Cobb took most of the Tri-Lakes area, including every town in the Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Keene school districts, plus the nearby town of Jay. Stefanik won Tupper Lake.

In Franklin County, Stefanik beat Cobb 6,753 to 6,237, a difference of 516 votes.

Stefanik took the 13 towns making up the north and western areas of the county, with the exception of Bombay in the far northwest. Cobb won five towns, including Harrietstown, Franklin, Brighton and Santa Clara.

The sparsely populated town of Duane, which sits around dead center in the county, exemplified this geographic difference with an exact 50/50 vote split: 46-46, plus one vote for Green Party candidate Lynn Kahn.

In this map of Franklin County, Rep. Elise Stefanik won a majority of votes in towns colored teal in this map, and Tedra Cobb won towns colored blue (except Duane in the middle, where the two tied).

Kahn broke into double-digit votes in only one precinct, with 10 votes in Tupper Lake’s third voting district, and earned 135 votes county-wide.

Essex was an even closer county, with a difference of 168 votes between Stefanik’s 6,589 and Cobb’s 6,421. Stefanik claimed more square mileage with 11 towns, and Cobb took seven towns including North Elba, the most populous, as well its neighboring St. Armand, Wilmington, Jay and Keene.

Stefanik dominated to lower half of the county and took most of the northeast, except the towns of Essex and Westport.

Kahn received 159 votes county-wide and broke into double digits once, in the town of Lewis with 12 votes.
