LAKE PLACID — Nobody showed up to the public hearing on raising parking meter violation fines Monday, so the amendment was approved within only a few moments.

The Lake Placid village board proposed raising parking meter fines from $25 to $35. If a parking fine is not paid within 30 days, an additional $10 is added to the total. Parking meter fines only refer to fines that come from staying in a spot for which you haven’t paid. This does not amend the fines for parking in a loading zone or handicap spot. which are $150 and $130, respectively.

Board members and local police agreed that the fine was too low and not taken seriously.

Officer Marty Perkins of the Lake Placid Police Department patrols Main Street every day and said people tend to laugh off $25 fines. He said re-offending locals might stop parking illegally, but the increased fine probably wouldn’t deter visitors.

There was also a resolution within the proposal that would make changing the price of a fine local law. That means the board won’t have to hold public hearings or file amendments with the secretary of state in Albany if it wants to raise or lower the fine in the future.

Trustee Peter Holderied questioned if they could make the fine $50. Trustee Art Devlin, who was sitting in for Craig Randall as active mayor, said if $35 doesn’t deter people from breaking the parking rules, then the board could always raise it in the future. Village Treasurer Paul Ellis said he thought $35 was a good place to start.
