Tupper Lake village board OKs 8-foot checkerboard in park
TUPPER LAKE — Eighth-grade Girl Scout Marissa Moeller addressed this village’s board Tuesday, requesting permission to build a life-size checkerboard in the Municipal Park.
Moeller is pitching the project to earn her Silver Award, the second-highest rank in Girl Scouts, on her path to earn the Gold Award. The requirements for this project include creating something to benefit the community and something that will have a lasting use in the community, so Moeller decided on the game of checkers.
She said with younger generations, including hers, spending more and more time on social media, she wants to see more of them enjoying the outdoors, spending time with friends and neighbors, and exercising their brains.
She has asked the town’s youth director, Angie Snye, to be her project adviser and said she hopes to include local businesses in the project.
The board wondered where the best place for the 8-by-8-foot board will be, discussing several locations from the large green space on the Junction end of the park to the grassy area near the Little Loggers playground.
Members of the board met with the consultants working on the park’s master plan Wednesday and said they would report back to Moeller with the advice they receive.
Moeller said she expects the construction of the board to last from April through June.
