St. Armand highway superintendent dies

Deputy, who was challenging incumbent for election, succeeds him

BLOOMINGDALE — St. Armand Highway Superintendent Roger Oliver died Saturday, and the town’s employees feel “devastated,” according to town Clerk Barbara Darrah. The death also shakes up the town highway department and the Nov. 7 election.

Oliver, 58, of Bloomingdale, was running for re-election and on Sept. 12 won the Republican primary by just two votes, 49-47, over his deputy superintendent, Douglas Snickles Jr. Now Snickles takes over managing the highway department, according to Darrah. She said he, too, is “devastated” by Oliver’s death.

Snickles remains on the ballot for November because he filed to run on his own party line as well as Republican, the clerk said. The town’s Republican committee is expected to decide today what to do about its endorsement.
