SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Adirondack Daily Enterprise won six awards, four of them first place, in the New York State Associated Press Association contest for 2016.

The Enterprise competed against other daily newspapers in New York with print circulation of less than 15,000. The awards banquet took place Saturday evening at the Holiday Inn in Saratoga Springs.

Three of the Enterprise’s awards were for writing and three for photography.

Managing Editor Peter Crowley won first place in the column category for his Roving Reporter columns on vintage car collector John “Hawkeye” Hawkinson, the Lake Placid Film Forum, and the naturalization of a lifelong Saranac Laker after he found out he wasn’t a U.S. citizen.

Crowley also won first place for editorial writing, for editorials about similarities between Rep. Elise Stefanik and Hillary Clinton, the relationship between Saranac Lake’s mayor and its newspaper, and mourning a fatal snowmobile crash involving two 12-year-old girls.

THIRD PLACE, SPOT NEWS PHOTOGRAPHY: An eight-point buck munches on an apple from a tree in Vermontville that came down in the winter's first snowstorm on the night of Oct. 22, 2016. (Enterprise photo — Justin A. Levine)

Staff Writer Antonio Olivero won first place for business reporting, for an in-depth look at the local proliferation of Airbnb rentals, and their implications.

Senior Sports Writer Lou Reuter won first place in the sports photo category for a shot of an intense softball player pitching the ball as snow falls.

Reuter also won third place in the feature photography category for a picture of a bass leaping out of the water to eat bugs, reflected in the still pond.

Outdoors and sports writer Justin A. Levine won third place in the spot news photo category for a snowstorm picture of a buck eating apples from a tree that was brought down by the snow.

“I’m very proud of these numerous prestigious awards from the AP reflecting the compelling and excellent journalism that our staff produces,” Enterprise Publisher Catherine Moore said. “This recognition also confirms that our readers receive a high standard of useful, trusted and credible information, which I think is amazing for the size communities we serve. We have a fantastic team of reporters who are hard working and I’m so grateful to have them representing the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.”

THIRD PLACE, FEATURE PHOTOGRAPHY: A bass casts its reflection on the water while breaking through the serene surface of Barnum Pond in Paul Smiths while in pursuit of a dragonfly early Wednesday evening, June 1, 2016.
