SARANAC LAKE — A new person is now in charge of getting the Adirondack Daily Enterprise and Lake Placid News into the hands of readers.

Twenty-two-year-old Tawnia (pronounced “TAHN-ya”) Provost officially started work Thursday as the newspapers’ new circulation sales manager. She replaces Alec Bieber, who is moving to Thailand, where his parents live. His last day on the job was Friday.

Provost grew up in nearby Saranac, attending public schools there and then SUNY Potsdam. She graduated from that college summa cum laude in May 2016, focusing her studies on politics and pre-law, and taking some classes at neighboring Clarkson University.

She interned with state Sen. Catharine Young, R-Olean, who later hired her as an employee. Provost reached out to Young’s constituents, wrote proclamations and organized budget hearings.

Provost said she loved state government but not the city where it is based.

“Albany was not for me,” she said.

“If I could take the Capitol and plop it down in the middle of nowhere, that would have been perfect.”

She later moved to Lake Placid, where she managed the spa at the Whiteface Lodge. She recently moved to Saranac Lake, and now she is transferring her management and organizational skills to the newspaper industry.

Provost said she has a lot to learn but is excited to come up with ways to get more people reading the newspaper.

She said she was pleased to find that the Enterprise and News are run by local staff rather than tightly controlled by a distant parent company.

“I like that it’s a small-town-type thing,” she said. “It wasn’t corporate.”
