APA approves new Lake Champlain Islands Complex

RAY BROOK — The state Adirondack Park Agency board approved a plan for management of six islands in Lake Champlain Friday morning.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation developed the Lake Champlain Islands Complex Unit Management Plan to provide guidance on how to manage natural and historical resources on a half-dozen islands in the lake.

The islands together total about 1,100 acres. The largest, Valcour Island in the town of Peru, has numerous historical and natural resources.

There are 29 campsites on Valcour Island, and eight of them will be removed as part of the plan. The DEC will also manage a lighthouse, memorial and stone house on the island.

More information on the details of the UMP will be in the Enterprise next week.
