Mayors ask Cuomo for help with N.Y.’s aging pipes

ALBANY (AP) — Mayors and other local officials from New York’s capital region are urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to remember the state’s aging water pipes as he puts together his budget proposal.

The group includes the mayors of Albany, Troy and other communities, along with county leaders and other local officials.

The coalition says it wants to see Cuomo devote $800 million to efforts to help local communities repair, replace and modernize drinking and wastewater systems.

The officials note Cuomo’s willingness to help in the past has helped pay for critical upgrades.

Several state lawmakers have signed on to the effort, including the group Environmental Advocates of New York.

Cuomo, a Democrat, is expected to present his next budget proposal after lawmakers begin the 2017 session next month.
