Snow joins the mix this weekend

North Country communities could see their first snowfall of the season tonight and Sunday.

The National Weather Service center in Burlington, Vermont, is calling for rain to change to snow across the higher elevations of the northern Adirondacks by this evening.

“A wet snow accumulation of a dusting to several inches is possible above 1,500 feet by Sunday morning with 6 inches or more possible at the summits,” the Weather Service said in a Hazardous Weather Outlook posted on Friday.

New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation issued a notice Friday advising hikers, particularly those heading to the northwestern Adirondacks and the High Peaks, to be prepared for snow accumulations ranging from 3 inches to a foot this weekend.

“Trails will be wet and muddy through midday Saturday and then become a mix of water, mud, ice, and snow before becoming snow covered,” the notice reads.

Hikers are encouraged to wear proper footwear and traction devices. Snowshoes will be warranted late Saturday and Sunday in the areas where moderate to deep snow is forecast, the DEC said.

The wet and cold weather provides ideal conditions for hypothermia, so hikers should wear layers of fleece, wool and other non-cotton clothing as well as waterproof outer layers, the DEC advised.

The department noted that sunset is also earlier now, and that there could be fallen or downed trees on some trails.
