Fire damages Lake Placid Lodge guest building

A guest building on the Lake Placid Lodge property was damaged by fire early this morning.

The Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department was called to the lodge’s Lakeside Building, which houses six suites for resort guests, at 4:01 a.m. for a reported structure fire. Four trucks, a fire boat and 29 members responded to the blaze.

“It started in the chimney, spread to the roof and caught the roof on fire,” said Matt Colby, the village’s head fire driver. “We used about 600 gallons of water (to extinguish the fire).”

There were guests in the Lakeside Building at the time. Colby said they were evacuated to the main lodge. No injuries were reported.

The damage was largely contained to the roof area and the wood structure that boxes the chimney pipe in, Colby said.

Lake Placid firefighters received mutual aid from the Wilmington, Saranac Lake and Bloomingdale volunteer fire departments. The Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Squad stood by at the scene.

Lake Placid firefighters were back in service by 7:17 a.m.
