Tent company seeks new site in Saranac Lake

SARANAC LAKE – An Ireland-based tent company won’t locate at Lake Flower Landing, but it still plans to make the village its North American headquarters.

Crua Outdoors had planned to set up a distribution center and small retail store at a former taxidermy shop on Lake Flower Avenue that’s undergone extensive renovations over the last two years. The plan was announced in early May.

However, the company wasn’t able to reach an agreement with building owners Karen Davidson and Peter Seward, who last week put up a “for lease” sign in the front window of Lake Flower Landing.

“Needless to say, we are disappointed that negotiating with Crua Outdoors came to nothing,” Davidson and Seward said in an email. “We wish them all the best and trust that there’s a silver lining for both of us as our new businesses take root in the region.”

Crua Outdoors was recruited to Saranac Lake by Point Positive, an investment group coordinated by Melinda Little. Point Positive is providing the company with a $250,000 infusion to get off the ground in North America.

Crua Outdoors is still committed to coming to Saranac Lake, Little said Tuesday.

“The deal (with Davidson and Seward) did not work out the way everybody had hoped and expected,” Little said. “I’m looking at other spaces now and waiting for pricing. We’ve got two or three really real possibilities. I’m expecting to be able to say something publicly about it in the next week.”

Little said the other locations being considered, which she didn’t name, are all in the village.

“It may be smaller to start with, but they do have some longer-term, larger goals,” she said. “One of the spaces I’m looking at probably wouldn’t have the retail option right off the bat, but two of them would.”

Crua Outdoors manufactures a line of tents designed to make camping more comfortable. Its flagship product, the Crua Loj, is billed as the world’s first thermally and acoustically insulated tent. It sleeps up to six people, has a large main room, porch and awning, and retails for $2,400.

CEO Derek O’Sullivan said in May that the company primarily needs a North American base from which to supply retailers, although it would sell tents on its own as well.

Davidson, a graphic designer, and Seward, an artist and illustrator, considered moving their studios from their Lake Placid home to Lake Flower Landing before the possibility of Crua Outdoors came up. Now they said they’re returning to that idea for the time being.

“Talking to Johnny Muldowney today of the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, we exclaimed about how the 1,800 square foot space can double as an event space for hire until an ideal tenant is found,” Davidson and Seward said in their email.

“We are on board for a Chamber after hours event in November. We appreciate the grounding that the space is giving us in the community. Now, there’s the possibility of curated exhibitions, film screenings, performances and workshops.”

Davidson and Seward also said they are excited to be aligned with other new businesses in Saranac Lake, naming the Fiddlehead Bistro and former Dew Drop Inn on Broadway, the upcoming Dance Sanctuary studio on Main Street and a taekwondo dojo in the former site of Nori’s Village Market.
