Dana promoted to police sergeant

TUPPER LAKE – A police patrolman was promoted to the rank of sergeant Wednesday evening.

Matthew Dana, 26, joined the force in 2012 as a part-time officer. His new position, which is provisional, was approved by the village Board of Trustees at its Wednesday meeting. The promotion will become permanent once Dana passes the county sergeant civil service exam. The chief said there is not currently a test date scheduled.

The department has one full-time and one part-time sergeant active, with a second full-time sergeant out on medical leave. Sgt. Sean Stradley was injured on the job in April 2015 when attempting to handcuff an individual who became violent.

Although Dana was the sole applicant for the post, Proulx said he is well qualified.

Dana is a graduate of Tupper Lake High School and SUNY Canton.

“I think it’s a job that I have a good skill set for and that will be rewarding,” he said.

Dana will earn $51,500 a year in the new position.
