Rangers make 9 rescues in past week

State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers conducted the following search-and-rescue missions this past week int he Adirondacks:

Town of Bolton

A 9-year-old boy from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, became separated from his party while hiking Thomas Mountain on Tuesday, July 26.

Rangers responded to the trailhead and located the boy a few hundred yards from the trailhead. Rangers brought the boy up the mountain and reunited him with his family. He was in good health.

Town of Greig

A 64-year-old woman from Carthage called 911 Wednesday, July 27, when she became lost after getting separated from her party.

One ranger and one DEC environmental conservation officer responded and found the woman in good health at the GPS location provided by her phone.

Town of North Elba

A 23-year-old man called for help after becoming lost on Thursday, July 28 while hiking to a pond between Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain.

The man gave a description of his vehicle, and a forest ranger found the vehicle at the Connery Pond trailhead.

The ranger located the man in good health on the trail and escorted him back to his car.

Town of North Elba

An 11-year-old girl from Dexter suffered a non-weight-bearing lower-leg injury while hiking the Algonquin Peak trail on Friday, July 29.

Shortly before noon, DEC dispatch received the call for assistance. Forest rangers, assistant forest rangers and the Marcy Dam caretaker responded. They carried the girl out to a waiting UTV for transport back to Adirondak Loj, where she was turned over to her summer camp counselors.

Town of Keene

A woman slid 80 feet down a cliff and required a technical rope rescue on Friday.

The 48-year-old from Princeton, New Jersey, slid down the cliff at the Canyon Foot Bridge. Rangers responded and performed the technical rescue to get both the woman and her son out of the gorge.

The pair were escorted to the AuSable Club guard shack, where she said she would seek medical attention on her own.

Town of Webb

A 47-year-old woman from Syracuse suffered a lower-leg injury while hiking Bald Mountain on Friday.

The woman was able to walk with assistance to back to the trailhead.

Town of Fort Ann

On Saturday, July 30, a 50-year-old woman suffered a lower-leg injury while hiking on Buck Mountain.

Rangers responded and stabilized the injury. The woman was able to walk with assistance, but the rangers also carried her and used a UTV to transport the woman back to the trailhead, where she was assessed by North Queensbury emergency medical services.

Town of Indian Lake

A 60-year-old woman from Old Say Brook, Connecticut suffered a lower-leg injury while rafting on the Indian River Saturday.

Two rangers responded and carried the woman to a waiting Indian Lake ambulance for transport to a local hospital for treatment.

Town of Elizabethtown

A 38-year-old woman from Broadalbin needed assistance from rangers when her lower-leg injury became progressively worse while hiking Giant Mountain Saturday.

The woman was part of a group, and given the group’s preparedness and impending nightfall, rangers determined that it would be best to assist the following morning.

Rangers and an assistant forest ranger, along with a state police helicopter, responded Sunday morning, July 31. Rangers stabilized the woman, and she was airlifted to Marcy Field, where Keene Valley Rescue transported her to a local hospital for treatment.

Town of Elizabethtown

A 20-year-old man from Queensbury became lost while bushwhacking on private land Sunday.

One ranger responded and escorted the man, who was in good health, out of the woods.
