Nine rescues make Saturday busy for DEC

Nine rescues on Saturday in the Adirondacks kept state Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers and other officials busy from 4 a.m. through midnight.

Rangers also made one other rescue this past week, last Tuesday.

Town of Keene

At 4 a.m. Saturday, DEC dispatch received a request for help for a 37-year-old man from Brooklyn who had suffered a leg injury the previous night.

Forest rangers, assistant forest rangers and a summit steward started to make their way to the man while a state police helicopter inserted a forest ranger from the air. The man was stabilized and airlifted to Marcy Field, where a Keene Valley ambulance was waiting. The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Town of North Elba

A 67-year-old man from Bennington, Vermont, was in medical distress on Saturday at Indian Falls.

The Marcy Dam caretaker and Mount Marcy summit steward assisted the man to Marcy Dam, where forest rangers were waiting with a UTV. The man was transported to Adirondak Loj and said he would seek medical assistance on his own.

Town of North Elba

An assistant forest ranger radioed for help for a 50-year-old woman who was in medical distress near Marcy Dam Saturday.

The assistant ranger stabilized the woman and helped her to Marcy Dam, where rangers took her out on a UTV to Adirondak Loj.

Town of Keene

Essex County 911 requested assistance from the DEC Saturday for a 29-year-old man from Plattsburgh who had suffered a leg injury on Cascade Mountain.

A ranger and assistant forest ranger stabilized the man and transported him to the trailhead, where the man said he would seek medical attention on his own.

Town of North Elba

An assistant forest ranger radioed DEC dispatch in Ray Brook Saturday to say she was en route to assist a 52-year-old woman from Buffalo who had suffered a lower leg injury near Marcy Dam.

A forest ranger transported the woman from Marcy Dam on a UTV to Adirondak Loj.

Town of Indian Lake

A 58-year-old woman from Ballston Lake suffered a non-weight-bearing lower-leg injury while hiking into OK Slip Falls on Saturday.

Rangers responded, stabilized the woman and transported her to the trailhead, where she said she would seek medical attention on her own.

Town of Ohio

A 25-year-old man from Rome suffered a leg injury while hiking at Chub Pond on Saturday.

Rangers responded with assistance from the Woodgate and Otter Lake fire departments, New York State Police and the Trackside Blazer Snowmobile Club, and stabilized the man for transport by all-terrain vehicle. The man was then transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

Town of Lake George

Employees at the Million Dollar Beach on Lake George called for assistance on Saturday for a hiking party lost on Prospect Mountain. A 56-year-old man, an 18-year-old male and a 13-year-old boy from Douglaston had become lost on the mountain.

A ranger located the group and assisted them to the trailhead. The ranger gave them a ride to their vehicle.

Town of Keene

Just before midnight on Saturday night, a 71-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman, both from Camillus, and a 72-year-old man, a 73-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman, all from Syracuse, were reported lost in the Adirondack Mountain Reserve when they failed to return from hiking.

A forest ranger located the group and brought them to the trailhead.

Town of Keene

On Tuesday, Aug. 16, a 66-year-old man from Valleyfield, Quebec, suffered a lower leg injury at Beaver Meadow Falls.

A forest ranger responded and stabilized the man’s injury. The ranger helped the man to the trailhead, where the man said he would seek medical attention on his own.
