DEC takes comments on fishing reg change proposals

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting public comments on proposed changes to freshwater fishing regulations until Oct. 7.

The DEC proposes changes to the regulations about every two years. Any proposed changes would go in effect in April 2017.

While many of the changes cover the Great Lakes and other bodies of water outside of the North Country, some proposals would affect fishing locally. For instance, one change would make St. Lawrence River tributaries in Franklin and Clinton counties exempt from Great Lakes regulations. Northern pike daily limits would also be lowered from five to three in the St. Lawrence River.

Some local ponds would also see an 18-inch minimum size limit and daily creel limit of three walleye.

Special trout regulations would be eliminated on Whey Pond in the Rollins Pond campground in the Franklin County town of Santa Clara, as would a special regulation on landlocked salmon in Piseco Lake in southern Hamilton County.

Comments on the proposals can be mailed to regulations.fish@dec.ny.gov. The text of the proposed regulations can be found at www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/propregulations.html.
