APA to hear about Van Ho trail change

RAY BROOK – Proposed changes to the cross-country ski trail system at Mount Van Hoevenberg will be on the agenda as the state Adirondack Park Agency meets Friday at its headquarters.

(Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said the meeting is Thursday.)

This month’s meeting will be shorter than normal, from 9 a.m. to lunchtime, with only the State Land Committee slated to meet. State Department of Environmental Conservation staff will present information to that committee on an amendment to the Mount Van Hoevenberg unit management plan.

The changes stem from two cross-country ski trails that currently cross two parcels of private land. One of the land owners has indicated that he will no longer allow the state Olympic Regional Development Authority to operate the trails on his land, so the changes to the UMP reflect a rerouting of those two one-way trails.

The new route would put the trails on nearby state land but would require tree cutting and grading, as well as construction of two bridges. The new location is close to and parallel to the current trails.

According to the proposed amendment, ORDA had a temporary easement over the land when the current trails were built, but that expired more than 10 years ago. The land has also been subdivided from one owner into two parcels. While the two owners have allowed the trails to exist up to this point, the owner of the eastern property, identified in Essex County public records as David Steckler, has indicated that he will no longer allow the trails across his 12.6-acre property.

The amendment calls for the bridges to be built using timber that is felled during the trail construction, along with pressure-treated wood for the bridge decking.

The committee will then decide on whether to host simultaneous public comment periods on changes to four campground UMPs. The proposed changes to the Limekiln Lake, Cranberry Lake, Eighth Lake and Lake Durant plans include routine upgrades of existing facilities such as paving of roads, construction of a new registration booth and replacement of drinking water lines.

The agency will also review minutes from the July meeting, which was the first meeting for new APA Chairman Sherman Craig, along with three new board members.

The agency’s next meeting will be held Sept. 15 and 16 at the agency headquarters at 1133 state Route 86, Ray Brook.
