Rangers rescue nearly a dozen people

Each week, the state Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers perform search and rescue duties on both public and private land in New York.

Town of Keene

On Monday, July 11, an assistant forest ranger radioed for help with a 55-year-old man from Palmetto, Florida, who had suffered a lower leg injury while hiking Big Slide Mountain in the High Peaks Wilderness.

Forest rangers responded and requested assistance from a state police helicopter. Rangers stabilized the man, and he was flown to a local hospital for treatment.

Town of North Elba

On Wednesday, July 13, a 30-year-old man from New Jersey was suffering from medical distress near Marcy Dam in the High Peaks Wilderness.

Rangers stabilized the man and helped him to the trailhead where a Lake Placid EMS ambulance waited to transport him a local hospital for treatment.

Town of Lake George

Just after noon on Thursday, July 14, rangers received a call for assistance from employees of DEC’s Pack Forest summer camp. A 15-year-old boy suffered a lower leg injury while hiking Tongue Mountain.

Rangers helped the boy down the mountain, and Pack Forest employees took the boy to a local hospital for treatment.

Town of Wilmington

On Saturday, July 16, two people became lost while hiking Whiteface Mountain shortly after 8 p.m. The 56-year-old man and 14-year-old boy, both from Howell, New Jersey, became lost while descending the mountain.

Rangers responded and made contact with the pair via cellphone. The rangers were able to direct the two back to the trail and guide them the rest of their way out.

Town of North Elba

A 31-year-old man from Rochester suffered a non-weight-bearing leg injury on Sunday, July 17 in the High Peaks Wilderness. The caretaker at Marcy Dam called for assistance for the man, and forest rangers took a UTV into Marcy Dam.

They transported the man to the South Meadow trailhead, where he left on his own to seek medical attention.

Town of Bolton

A trio of women called DEC dispatch in Ray Brook for help when they got lost hiking down Cat Mountain on July 17.

The 17, 18 and 19-year-olds, all from Albany, became lost shortly after 4 p.m. A forest ranger was able to contact them on the phone and directed them to a nearby cabin. The ranger met them at the cabin and guided them back to the trailhead in good condition.
