DEC will host wildlife, falconry, tracking dog exams

The state Department of Environmental Conservation will be holding exams for those who want to become licensed wildlife rehabilitators. There will also be an exam to earn a leashed tracking dog license or to be a licensed falconry handler.

The exams will be held on Aug. 12, and the deadline to register is July 22.

To earn the falconry license, participants must be at least 14 years old and a New York state resident. You must also hold a valid hunting license and have DEC-approved falconry housing. A five-year falconry license costs $40.

Wildlife rehabilitators must be 16 years old, submit two letters of reference and be interviewed by DEC staff. Applicants are encouraged to gain experience working under a licensed wildlife rehabilitator before taking the exam.

To earn the leashed tracking dog license you must have a valid big-game hunting license. The tracking dog license costs $50 for five years, with a non-refundable $25 application fee.

All potential licensees need to score an 80 percent or better on the respective exam.
