Bandshell benefit in Tupper

TUPPER LAKE – Tickets are on sale for Picnic in the Park, a Tupper Lake Lions Club fundraiser for a proposed bandshell performance area from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18.

Tickets include food, drink and entertainment on the same plot of land where the village hopes to begin building a bandshell next spring. All food is donated by the Lions Club, and the entertainers will perform pro-bono, so all proceeds will benefit the conceptualization, materials and construction related to the bandshell.

The benefit will feature pork tenderloin prepared by Tom Siacca and hot dogs, hamburgers, salads and other foods served by the Lions Club. Beer and wine will be served courtesy of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars hall.

Live music will be performed by Ben McClelland and Jay Martin, followed by a performance from George and Elizabeth Cordes of High Peaks Opera. The picnic will also feature games such as bean bag toss and horseshoes. The village Department of Public Works will provide picnic tables, firewood and a fire pit.

The bandshell is part of the Waterfront Park Master Plan released in November 2015 by Terrain, a landscape and architecture firm based in New York City. Much like the Mid’s Park bandshell in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake bandshells in Riverside Park and Berkeley Green, it would provide a sheltered venue for bands and actors to place equipment and perform outdoors.

A committee of village representatives formed this year to spearhead the bandshell’s development. They’ve hired engineer and former local Kurt Bedore to create several designs of the bandshell for an upcoming public hearing.

Funding for the bandshell would also come from a $95,000 state grant, according to village Trustee Ron LaScala.

Tickets are $25 per person and $40 for a couple. They can be purchased at the Tupper Lake Free Press, village office, Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce and Nichols Insurance.

The scheduled rain date for the event is Friday, Aug. 19.
