APA, with new board, reviews Ray Brook gas station

RAY BROOK – The state Adirondack Park Agency will have its first regular meeting since three new commissioners and a new chairman were approved by the state Senate.

Sherman Craig will sit in the chairman’s seat, while John Ernst, Chad Dawson and Saranac Lake resident Barb Rice join him at the board table for the first time.

The meeting will take place Thursday at agency headquarters in Ray Brook.

Kicking off at 9 a.m., Craig is expected to make opening remarks. He said in an interview with the Enterprise last week that he will ask the new board members to speak as well.

The agency has a full agenda for the day, and includes discussions on the proposed plan for the Maplefields / Ray Brook Sunoco across state Route 86 from the APA headquarters. R.L. Vallee, Inc., is proposing to replace the existing gas station and convenience store, along with three cabins, with a new convenience store and gas station. The project will increase the number of gas pumps and parking spaces.

The State Land Committee will hear from staff of the state Department of Environmental Conservation on the Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest unit management plan, the Horicon boat launch UMP and the Wilmington Wild Forest UMP amendment.

The Park Policy and Planning Committee will hear about amendments to three maps, including in the towns of St. Armand and Crown Point.

The Local Government Services Committee will discuss the town of Lake George land use amendment before the full agency meets at 4:30 p.m.
