Another busy week for local rangers

State forest rangers were engaged in numerous rescues around the Adirondacks this past week.

Town of Indian Lake

Hamilton County sheriffs contacted Department of Environmental Conservation dispatch in Ray Brook Sunday, May 15 after a call from a 34-year-old man was dropped while he reported that he was lost in the Tirrell Pond area.

Rangers located the man in a seasonal camp that he was able to access. The man had been lost for two hours before finding the camp. Rangers escorted the man out to the trailhead, where he was reunited with family.

Town of St. Armand

A 50-year-old woman from South Colton called for help Saturday afternoon after suffering a lower leg injury while hiking Mount Baker.

Rangers responded and carried the woman out about three-quarters of a mile in a litter. The woman said she would seek medical attention on her own.

Town of Keene

A 47-year-old woman from Old Forge became stranded on a cliff after sliding down a slide on the Wedge Brook trail while descending Gothics Mountain Saturday afternoon. The woman was uninjured but was stuck on the ledge.

Several forest rangers began hiking in while others met the state police helicopter at Marcy Field. One ranger was inserted, via helicopter, on the ridge above the woman and was able to assist her getting off of the cliff.

The woman was met on the trail after her rescue by rangers who escorted her out to her car.

Town of Santa Clara

Franklin County 911 transferred a call to DEC dispatch in Ray Brook on Saturday afternoon when a 22-year-old man from Oneida suffered a lower-leg injury while hiking St. Regis Mountain.

The man’s hiking partners had called for assistance and then were helping the man descend the mountain when rangers arrived. The rangers escorted the man to the parking area, where he said he would seek medical treatment on his own.

Town of Ohio

Herkimer County 911 requested assistance from Ray Brook dispatch Saturday in locating a missing 49-year-old man from Simpson, Pennsylvania.

The man was lost in the Little Falls area, and GPS coordinates showed that he was only about 700 feet from Gary Wilmurt Road. After establishing voice contact, rangers, state police and the Poland fire department found the man in good condition and escorted him back to his vehicle.

Town of Keene

On Sunday night, a 32-year-old woman from Ontario was reported lost after her hiking partner became separated from her while hiking Giant Mountain.

Rangers responded and searched several trails before locating the woman near the Washbowl just after 3 a.m. on Monday morning. The woman was escorted out to the trailhead and was reunited with her hiking partner.
